Cultural Context (Contemporary Era)

Updated: Jun 5, 2022

Jennifer Higdon is a composer in the contemporary music, and her compositions are among the most played in America. Joel Hoffman’s article, “Anything Can Happen: Jennifer Higdon on Contemporary Music,” demonstrates that Higdon’s orchestral music, Blue Cathedral, has been performed by many American orchestras than any other American composer. In fact, Higdon says that many audiences are appealed to her music because it resonates new concert music in the twenty-first century. Apparently, Higdon’s music is uplifting and riveting, and Hoffman claims that “her music is as American as American music gets.” According to an interview between Rumpus and Higdon, the latter stipulates that her music has storylines like Blue Concerto, and some have an emotional appeal to its audiences like 75th anniversary of the Curtis Institute, whereby she “felt like I was pouring my heart and soul into the piece because it was written at a time in which I was grieving the loss of a younger brother” (Hoffman). Therefore, Hoffman’s pieces are mostly contemporary because of the emotional intensity they have and use of soft rhythms.

  1. Blue Concerto- Higdon says that this piece has a storyline, which is among the characteristics of contemporary music.

2. Violin Concerto,

3. Percussion Concerto- Higdon's piece contains a mixture of pop, jazz and rock music.
